Description
Quintet for piano and string quartet (2024) was a commission from Palau de la Musica Catalana and was written for and dedicated to Canadian pianist Jaeden Iziko-Dzurko and the Atenea quartet. It was premiered at the Palau de la Music Catalana on April 8, 2024. This work has four movements and the duration is approx. 35 minutes. A video of the premiere will be posted on this site soon.
The intention was to write a quintet of four movements, to complement the limited repertoire of quintets currently being played, but venturing into a more Mediterranean sound world that integrates various influences, from Spanish and Catalan popular music, especially in the second (Scherzo) and fourth movements (Rondo), to the more austere and modal sound world, although with Mediterranean touches, of the first movement (Allegro energico), and of the third (Ballade) with a denser texture and long lines melodic, rooted in romanticism. The quintet has a cyclical structure, all movements linked by developing melodic and rhythmic patterns, introduced in the first movement, Allegro energico. The third movement is tied to the fourth and is performed without stopping.
The piano writing is virtuoso, but always within the limits of chamber music. The second movement I was inspired by two rhythmic-melodic motifs from Medtner’s ‘sonata romantica’, but the ideas take off into a capricious world of Spanish sounds and unpredictable rhythmic ostinatos where the piano is the leader of the music, and contrasts with the darker world of the central trio with the strings being the protagonists. The fourth movement (Rondo) continues the lightness and brilliance of the Scherzo in which I developed the playful Catalan popular song El petit vailet in a series of non-strict variations that eventually get back to the sounds and motives of the first movement, tying the whole work together. The first movement is in sonata form and the third movement is a Ballade with more romantic overtones.
