Description
Quintet for piano and string quartet (2024) was commissioned by the Palau de la Musica Catalana in occasion of Elisenda’s residence at the Palau during the 2023-24 season. The premiere took place on April 8, 2024, at the Petit Palau Concert Hall, performed by award-winning Canadian pianist Jaeden Izik-Dzurko and the Atenea Quartet, to whom the work was dedicated. It was premiered in a program accompanying Schumann’s Piano Quintet.
The aim was to write a piano quintet of four movements, to complement the limited repertoire of piano quintets being performed, by venturing into a Mediterranean sound world that integrates various folk influences within an international style: from Spanish and Catalan popular music – especially in the second (Scherzo) and fourth movements (Rondo)- to the more austere and modal sound world (although with Mediterranean touches) of the first movement (Allegro energico), and of the third (Ballade) with a denser texture and longer melodic lines, rooted in romanticism. The quintet has a cyclical structure, all movements are linked by developing melodic and rhythmic patterns introduced in the first movement, Allegro energico. The third movement is connected to the fourth and is performed without stopping.
The piano writing is virtuosic but tightly integrated with the strings, and always within the limits of chamber music. Duration 35’
