Description
Danses de la terra (Catalan dances) (2021) for viola is an arrangement of the original piece written for cello in 2020. The cello version was premiered on October 28, 2020, at the Palau Güell in Barcelona, by Catalan cellist Roger Morelló Ros, for whom it was written. Although not literally based on traditional Catalan music, this work is inspired by the composer’s childhood memories of Catalonian dances and folk music. As a Catalan living outside Catalonia since 1978, the author ‘recreates’ a Catalan sound world of melodic and rhythmic folk idioms tinged with emotions from her childhood. All the music is original.
This work consists of four dances:
- Ball d’entrada (Opening dance)
- Dansa de rondalla amorosa (Dance of amorous tale)
- Ball ceremonial de purificació (Ceremonial dance of purification)
- Records de sardana (Memories of sardana)
Since the cello premiere, this work has been championed by Catalan cellist Roger Morello Ross, and performed multiple times in Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain, and USA. It has also been recorded by Roger Morello Ros on the CD “La veu de Casals” released by lbs Classical and available to listen at https://www.roger-morello-ros.com/the-voice-of- casals
