Festival Más i Más (Reial Cercle Artistic) – David James Kim, cello – August 7, 2015, 18:30, 19:30, and 20:30

On August 7, 2015, Festival Más i Más will present American cellist David James Kim in a program titled Tribute to Pau Casals. David will perform the world premiere of Elisenda’s new solo cello work  – Homenatge a Pau Casals (Homage to Pau Casals). The program will also include Colores Andaluces for cello & piano along with works by Beethoven, Schumann and Debussy.  He will be joined by Jinha Park at the piano.  Both performers will also present Elisenda’s works at the Music Fest Perugia in Italy, where they will be on the faculty this summer.

Ilshin Hall, Seoul – March 11, 2015, 7:30 PM

On March 11, 2015, the World Classic Series Concerts presented Jinha Park, piano, and David Kim, cello, performing Colores Andaluces for cello & piano and Mirage for piano solo. These performances took place at the Ilshin Hall in Seoul, and are part of an evening of Spanish music that also included music by Albeniz, F. Tárrega, Manuel Infante and Manuel de Falla.

Atlanta, February 8, 2015, Premiere Triple Concerto for Piano Trio and Orchestra (2015)

Triple Concerto for Piano Trio and Orchestra (2015) was commissioned by Trio Nova Mundi: Becky Billock, piano; Elisa Kohansky, cello; and Maureen Conlon, violin. It will be premiere on February 8 2015, by Trio Nova Mundi and the Atlanta Community Orchestra (ACSO) led by artistic director Juan R. Ramirez. The concert will take place at Kopleff Recital Hall, 10 Peachtree Center Avenue, Atlanta, GA 3030.

This concerto is a reflection on the state of coexistence among diverse populations of the world and an homage to the unique medieval culture of Al-Andalous in Spain, a culture in which three diverse populations – Arabs, Jews and Christians – coexisted harmoniously for almost eight centuries. Metaphorically, these three populations are represented by three soloists – sharing equally the limelight, interacting with each other, and dialoguing with the orchestra. There are three movements, each with a tripartite structure.

The first movement (Allegro moderato) features haunting harmonies and pleading melodic gestures evocative of flamenco, as well as an exciting cadenza-like passage for the three soloists in the center. The second movement starts and ends with a Pensaroso (Pensive) section that flanks an intense Appassionato and a triumphal section marked Con resoluzione. The third movement (Allegro deciso) is distinguished for its energy and rhythmic vitality, with an expressive and quasi-religious passage in the center played by the violin and the cello.

“The concert opened with Elisenda Fábregas Flute Sonata, four movements of rhythmically tricky and aurally piquant musical textures. Its exoticism was an offshoot of the sound worlds of Debussy and Messiaen, dreamy and impressionistic in the slow movement, but picked up pace in the fleet-footed scherzo, an exercise in staccato playing that extended without a break into the finale.  Both Alvarez and pianist Shane Thio were pushed to wits’ end to overcome the complexities, but acquitted themselves marvelously.”

Two new works for violin

Hungarian concert violinist Rodrigo Puskás superb artistry and distintive style of playing, characterized by a ‘beautifully moving and warm’ singing tone, along with breathtaking virtuosity, inspired the composer to write two works for him.

Ancient walls (2012) is a one-movement work for the violin that echoes the sounds of the ancient world. The title is a metaphor for the ‘walls’ that, literally and figuratively, sometimes separate cultures and people from each other; and also alludes to the common European heritage shared by Puskás and the composer, both natives of fiercely independent cultures that have struggled over time to retain their identity.

Wandering spirit for violin and piano (2013) is a musical metaphor for the quest for truth, which is symbolized musically by moments of discovery, with longing and soaring solo lines in the violin, and moments of struggle marked by dissonant interaction between the violin and the piano. This work ends with a bright major harmony through which both the music resolves and the quest comes to an end.

Terra Mater

is a compact one movement dramatic work for symphony orchestra (approx. 10′) that deals symbolically with the creative and destructive powers of nature.

Terra Mater follows the footsteps of Voices of the Rainforest (2007), another work dealing with nature. However the content and gestures of Terra Mater have a deeper sense of urgency. I have always felt that the earth is an organism just like we are, and as such it deserves our respect. If we fail to take care of the earth it may lead to our own destruction. Beneath the dramatic gestures of Terra Mater there is an underlying and compelling lament that surfaces at crucial points of the piece connecting the various strains and providing structure. I have wanted to write an orchestral work on this topic for long time and I welcome this opportunity with excitement. The recent weather events in all parts of the world make nature a ‘hot’ topic and I am eager to make a contribution in musical terms. I live now in Seoul and last summer I had the chance to experience the Asian monsoon season; it was apparently one of the hottest and rainiest summers on record in Seoul. This extreme Korean weather reminded me of the Texas summer storms at most violent. To me there is nothing more awesome and overwhelming than the power of nature. I can understand how ealier civilizations, much more connected with nature than we are, worshipped many elements of the physical world with its capacity to create and destroy.

Homenatge a Mompou for piano (2007)

Homenaje a Mompou was commissioned by Dutch pianist Marcel Worms. The premiere took place at a Mompou Festival in Amsterdam in November 2007 and subsequent concerts in Holland, including Hertogenbosch, and the U.S.

“I have always felt very close to Mompou’s music. I performed for him in Barcelona in 1978 right before going to study piano at the Juilliard School in New York City. A few years back, Mompou had performed and lectured on his music at The Juilliard School and he was well remembered and respected there. Mompou was a very imposing and tall man, with very large hands, but with a very gentle and quiet personality. While in New York I studied and performed most of Mompou’s music. The Catalan melodies in his music made me very nostalgic of my country. Later on, the study of Mompou’s music proved to be a powerful influence on my own compositional style. When in the summer of 2006 Marcel Worms approached me with the idea of writing an Homage to Mompou for the 25th anniversary of his death I was thrilled!” (Elisenda Fabregas)
